Joining Marston’s from the military

Why might driver/driver’s mate opportunities be ideal for people from a military background?

A number of our drivers and mates joined Marston’s after successful careers in the military. They’ve found that there’s a close match between the skills required of a driver/mate and those that they used in their previous roles.

Oliver Elwell and Matthaus Lomberg started working at our depot in Blackburn last year. Oliver had spent three years doing vehicle mechanics in locations across the UK while Matthaus was deployed to Afghanistan as part of a fire support team. They’re now employed as a driver and driver’s mate respectively.

Oliver said, “What I like about my role with Marston’s is that it gets me out and about, and it’s always busy – no two days are the same and that keeps it interesting. It’s nice that we get to see a lot of the same customers regularly; you get to know them quite well.”

Matthaus added, “The hours work really well for me, as I’m used to the early starts from the army. It suits my lifestyle. This job keeps me active and all the drivers here get on really well together, so the atmosphere’s a fun one and we do have a laugh as well as work hard.”

They think their roles are a good fit for people who’ve been in the military because they’re known for their work ethic, discipline and good people skills.

“You’ve got to be reliable and able to use your own initiative”, said Oliver. “Patience is important when it comes to dealing with difficult customers or situations, and you really need to be a self-starter, someone who can just get on with the job at hand!”
