Pre-opening training

At Marston’s we are really passionate about the training we deliver to our new team members, both front of house and kitchen.

Front of house team members will be given all the skills to be able to complete each and every job role front of house. To do this, we’ve created an eight day training plan consisting of both theoretical and practical sessions, which covers the following areas:

  • Service style and values
  • Dispense training
  • Wine training
  • Food service
  • Table management
  • Till training

Our kitchen training sessions ensure that our new kitchen team members are comfortable with policy and procedure, understand our brand standards, and are able to operate safely in the kitchen. The training covers the following:

  • Carvery excellence training
  • Perfect plate and the perfect steak
  • Ordering and the back office system
  • Ticket control sessions
  • Complaint handling
  • A full menu cook-off

As well as ensuring that our new team members are comfortable with every aspect of their job roles, our training sessions also offer a great opportunity to get to know the other new starters – we include a number of team building exercises in the training week and use knowledge quizzes and fun activities to create an enjoyable and positive environment. Games our new teams particularly enjoy include the Cracker game, Jenga, Balloon Pop, Egg and Spoon, Human Knot and Higher or Lower!

Want to apply to work in one of our new builds?

Check out our current opportunities listed below. Here's what happens once you've applied online:

  • The New Build General Manager will review your application and may call you to conduct a telephone interview
  • If you are successful at application stage, you will be invited to a recruitment day which always takes place four weeks before the pub is due to open (senior team members will instead be invited to an interview and Head Chefs will need to complete a trial shift too)
  • If you are offered a position, you will be given the details for the pre-opening training, which commences two weeks prior to the pub opening
