Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an aspiring Business Development Manager to join our team.  If you are looking to take the next step and develop into a Multi-Site Manager, then this is the role for you.

As a Trainee Business Development Manager, we will offer you lots of help and support in developing your skills and your first 12 months in the role will be a training period. During your development you will have responsibility for an Area consisting of self-employed pub businesses operating within our operational framework.

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic, passionate, committed, dedicated and willing to learn in order to develop their management skills.

You will be partnering with our Operators so driving a sales culture is integral to our joint success.

At Marston’s we care about our Teams, our Operators and our Customers and so we place people at the heart of everything we do. Our Business Development Managers make sure these values live and breathe in the pubs that they are responsible for. They provide guidance, support and coaching to our Pub Operators in order to deliver exceptional financial and operational results and to ensure our pubs are the “place to be” within their communities.

You will be responsible for leading a team of self-employed operators in making decisions about how to best drive sales and service to the needs of the local community. You will be responsible for meeting financial KPI’s and hold full budget responsibility for your area. You will advise your operators on the best ways to drive profitability for their business.

As well as working closely with your Pub Operators, you will also build effective working relationships with central support teams such as customer service teams, recruitment, training, finance and marketing as well as liaising with suppliers and local authorities.

 Key Accountabilities:

  • Maximise the potential of our operators to deliver operational excellence, developing their personal and business skills through training, coaching and mentoring
  • Motivate each other towards an end goal which is of mutual benefit to them and Marston’s
  • Review the operator’s progress around achieving sales and profit targets through regular business development review meetings
  • Ensure you have a people plan for your area, working closely with the resourcing team to identify and develop talent on your area through strong succession planning
  • Get to know your competition by conducting regular networking activity to build a talent pipeline and to ensure future people needs are addressed and helping your operators understand that competition comes in different forms, not just other pub businesses
  • Provide business advice in a non-management capacity to Operators, being unafraid to tackle challenging situations and conversations. Find resolutions to conflict in a business relationship capacity
  • Full P&L responsibility with a focus on driving sales and profit and delivering great service in every business
  • Deliver a rolling programme of capital investment into our sites underpinned by commercial decision making on the type of investment that will work for Marston’s, our customers and local communities
  • Ensure Marston’s guidelines and procedures are met at all times
  • Ensure compliance with the Pubs Code 2016
  • Operate our pubs within the current legal and environmental regulations

The Ideal Candidate:

  • You will be an aspiring Area Manager or Business Development Manager, currently taking on additional responsibility within your working environment
  • Be able to demonstrate enviable P&L success
  • Have proven success stories in developing people
  • Strong drive to inspire, motivate and engage others, celebrating the successes of your team
  • Ability to dream big by driving and maximising commercial opportunities
  • A thirst for development and a drive to be the best
  • A willingness to listen and learn from colleagues

What You Get in Return:

• 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays with the ability to buy and sell holiday
• 20% off in Marston’s pubs and accommodation through our Privilege Card
• Marston’s Rewards Programme (discounts with major retailers)
• Share Save Incentive Scheme
• Company Contributory Pension Scheme
• Bonus Scheme
• Generous Car Allowance
